What the exam covers: Real Estate Salesperson (RES)
The DRE exam for the California real estate salesperson license is a multiple-choice test given by DRE. DRE publishes the content outline for the salesperson exam on its website (www.dre.ca.gov/examinees/SalesExamContent.html), and that outline should guide what you study first.
Ultimate License Prep organizes the practice questions into the categories listed below, which follow the topic areas in that outline, so you can find the areas where you miss the most questions and spend your time there.
Work through one category at a time, use the missed-question review to see which topics keep costing you points, and return to your weakest category until the answers feel automatic.
Ultimate License Prep turns that outline into 700 practice questions in 7 categories (Property Ownership and Land Use Controls and Regulations, Laws of Agency and Fiduciary Duties, Property Valuation and Financial Analysis, Financing, Transfer of Property, and Practice of Real Estate and Disclosures, including Specialty Areas, and more), plus 7 Learning Hub lessons with diagrams (such as "Property Ownership and Land Use: What You Own, How You Hold It, and What Limits It" and "Agency and Fiduciary Duties: Who You Represent and What You Owe").

Frequently asked questions
How do I get a California real estate salesperson license?
You apply to the California Department of Real Estate (DRE). DRE requires applicants to be at least 18 and to complete three college-level courses (Real Estate Principles, Real Estate Practice and one elective) to qualify for the salesperson exam. Requirements change, so confirm them at www.dre.ca.gov/examinees/requirementssales.html. This course covers the exam preparation part.
What do the real estate salesperson practice questions focus on?
Contracts is the largest of the 7 categories, with 100 of the 700 questions, followed by Financing with 100. The categories follow the topic areas in the DRE salesperson exam content outline (www.dre.ca.gov/examinees/SalesExamContent.html), and DRE notes that a test samples the broad field and does not necessarily cover every listed topic.
What kinds of questions are on the real estate salesperson exam?
DRE lists the salesperson exam as 150 multiple choice questions in 3 hours, with four answer choices for each question (www.dre.ca.gov/Examinees/TakingExam.html). The practice questions here use the same style, and the missed-question review brings back every one you get wrong until the answer is automatic.
What score do I need to pass the real estate salesperson exam?
DRE states the passing score for salespersons is 70% of the questions (www.dre.ca.gov/Examinees/TakingExam.html). Check that page for the current rules before your exam.
Do I have to live in California to take the real estate salesperson exam?
DRE says residency in California is not required to apply, and it has a separate page for out-of-state applicants (www.dre.ca.gov/Examinees/OutOfState.html). Confirm the current rules with DRE before you apply.
How are the 700 RES practice questions organized?
They are split into 7 categories, largest first: Contracts (100), Financing (100), Laws of Agency and Fiduciary Duties (100), Practice of Real Estate and Disclosures, including Specialty Areas (100), and 3 more. Contracts holds about 14% of the questions. 7 Learning Hub lessons add diagrams and worked examples for the harder topics. The missed-question review collects every question you get wrong.
Is there a free trial for real estate salesperson exam prep?
Yes. The free preview opens the real classroom with no sign-up and gives you the first question from every RES category, including Contracts and Financing. The full course is a one-time $249 purchase.
Is real estate salesperson exam prep available in Spanish?
The website is available in Spanish. The classroom and the 700 RES practice questions are in English for now; translating the questions is not part of the course yet.
