California Real Estate Exam Prep FAQ

Plain answers about what Ultimate License Prep does, what you get with your purchase, and how the DRE salesperson exam process works, with the official source for every exam fact.

What is Ultimate License Prep?

An online study and practice system for the California real estate salesperson exam. It is a private study tool. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or part of the California Department of Real Estate (DRE).

Each course includes practice questions with an explanation for every answer, organized by the exam content areas that DRE publishes.

Do you guarantee that I will pass?

No. No course can guarantee a passing result, and we do not publish pass rates. What we offer is study material, an explanation for each practice answer, and support when you need it.

DRE sets the passing score at 70% of the questions for the salesperson exam.

What is the salesperson exam like?

DRE lists the salesperson exam as 150 multiple choice questions in 3 hours, with four answer choices for each question. The passing score is 70% of the questions.

DRE publishes the exam content outline with approximate weights for each content area, and notes that a test samples the broad field and does not necessarily cover every listed topic.

Who gives the exam, and how do I schedule it?

The exam is given by the California Department of Real Estate (DRE). Examinees can self-schedule or reschedule through DRE's eLicensing system, and a barcoded schedule notice is printed online.

DRE lists scheduling locations in Fresno, San Diego, the Los Angeles vicinity, Oakland and Sacramento. You cannot request a specific room within an area.

What do I need before I can take the exam?

DRE requires applicants to be at least 18 years old. California residency is not required. Applicants must be honest and truthful, and a criminal conviction may lead to denial.

To qualify for the exam you complete three college-level courses: Real Estate Principles, Real Estate Practice, and one elective from DRE's list. Courses must be three semester units or four quarter units, and continuing education does not count. Confirm the details with DRE before you apply.

How long do I have to take the exam after I apply?

For an exam-only application, DRE says you have two years from the date DRE received the application to complete the qualifications and take the examination. For a combined exam and license application, you must pass the examination within two years of the date the application is filed.

What should I bring on exam day?

A valid, unexpired photo ID: a state driver's license or DMV ID card, a U.S. or foreign-government passport, or a U.S. military ID card. Without it you are not admitted.

DRE asks examinees to arrive 30 minutes early, and sessions begin promptly as scheduled. Phones must be powered off and stored in a locker during the exam, including breaks.

When do I get my results, and can I retake the exam?

Electronic exam results are given when you finish. Passing examinees are not told a final score; examinees who do not pass receive their score and the percentage correct by subject area.

You may reapply only after receiving a failing result. DRE sets no limit on the number of exams taken within two years of your original application; after two years you submit a new application and requalify.

How much do the exam and the license cost?

DRE charges its own fees, and we do not list amounts because they can change. Check the current amounts on the DRE fee page. DRE fees are separate from the price of this course.
